Teacher's Office
My name is Stephen Johns. I am married to Karen Johns who is also a music educator in the Sarasota Public School system. I have three children Alina, Crystal, and Byron. I presently teach chorus and music theory at Venice High School. This is my 14th year at VHS. I have been teaching music for over 20 years. I have taught at all levels k through 14 in the areas of chorus, orchestra, music history, guitar, and general music. I also teach a music history at Manatee Community College where I have been on the adjunct faculty for many years.
I hold both a Bachelors and a Masters degree in Music from The Florida State University and hold National Board Certification. After college I worked as a Music Therapist for a number of years before teaching music in the Public Schools. I have also worked outside the field of music as a building contractor, and in the forestry industry.
I have performed professionally as a singer in Gloria Musicae, Florida Voices and as a guest artist in churches. I have led students on many performance tours in the United States and in Europe.
I am presently the Director of the Performing Arts Learning Community at VHS which is one of the Small Learning Communities in our school. I enjoy working at VHS and look forward to the coming years as we strive for excellence.
