Standard 2: Atomic Structure

The student will relate the structure of the atom to the properties of matter.

*Not correlated to State Grade Level Expectations

2.1 Demonstrate an understanding that scientists' concept of atomic structure has evolved

2.1.1*  recognize the contributions of Dalton, Rutherford, Bohr and others to our understanding of atomic structure
2.1.2*  diagram an atom and show the location of the nucleus, protons, neutrons and electrons (electron clouds)
2.1.3  compare early atomic models to current atomic models
2.2 Relate sub-atomic particles to their properties

2.2.1*  explain the properties of the neutron
2.2.2*  describe the properties of the proton
2.2.3  describe the properties of the electron
2.3 Distinguish between stable and unstable (radioactive) isotopes

2.3.1  differentiate between stable and unstable isotopes
2.3.2  relate the predictability of spontaneous decay to the estimation of the age of materials containing radioactive isotopes
