Grade Three
Standard 7: Ecology

The student will demonstrate the skills and knowledge necessary for the study of ecology.

*Not correlated to State Grade Level Expectations

7.1 Demonstrate a knowledge of how living things interact with each other and the environment

 
7.1.1  recognize that energy which organisms need for survival comes from food they eat or make
7.1.2  identify examples of living things classified as producers, consumers, carnivores, herbivores and omnivores
7.1.3  recognize ways that animals depend upon plants for survival (e.g., food, shelter, oxygen)
7.1.4  recognize how organisms with similar needs compete for resources (e.g., food, water, shelter, space)
7.1.5  recognize that the size of a population is limited by the availability of resources
7.1.6  identify behavioral and structural adaptations that allow plants and animals to survive in an environment (e.g., polar bears' fishing abilities and thick fur coats)
7.2 Recognize how human beings impact the environment

 
7.2.1  classify resources as renewable or nonrenewable
7.2.2  recognize that reusing, recycling, recovering and reducing the use of natural resources improves and protects the quality of life
7.2.3  recognize that alternative energy sources (e.g., synthetic fuels, geothermal power, wind energy, solar energy) are being developed
